A few dishes and spots genuinely define eating in Columbus, and skipping them means missing what makes the local food scene distinct.
The Thurman Burger at The Thurman Cafe in German Village is probably the most cited Columbus food experience. The signature burger runs roughly $14–16 and has been featured on the Food Network's Man v. Food. The cafe sits on Thurman Avenue and keeps a cash-friendly, no-frills atmosphere that has stayed consistent for decades.
For Columbus-style pizza, Donatos originated here in 1963 and still operates dozens of locations across the city. Its edge-to-edge pepperoni thin crust is the local benchmark. A large runs approximately $18–22 depending on toppings and location.
Schmidt's Restaurant und Sausage Haus, also in German Village, has served German sausages and cream puffs since 1886. The half-pound cream puffs are around $6–8 and have their own following separate from the main menu.
In the Short North, North Market (open Tuesday–Sunday) houses local vendors including Flavors of India, Dos Hermanos, and La Dolce Vita Gelato, making it a practical way to sample several Columbus food businesses in one stop. Parking on weekends fills fast; the Short North garage on North Fourth Street is the closest paid option.
For late-night eating, Starliner Diner in Hilliard and Harvest Pizzeria on South Fourth Street are frequently cited by locals as consistent neighborhood anchors worth the trip outside downtown.
